AMARO HAVEN BAR 821 HAS REOPENED AFTER A FOUR-YEAR CLOSURE

San Franciscans are notoriously enamored with dark, bitter liqueurs — in particular Fernet Branca. And as of earlier this month, there’s a new destination to explore the world of herbal amari. According to an email from owner Khaled Dajani, Divisadero Street watering hole Bar 821 has reopened following a years-long closure initiated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bar is currently open Friday and Saturday nights from 6 p.m. to midnight with plans to extend operating hours to include Thursday evenings by April 28. You’ll have to ring a doorbell to enter, and there are no reservations.

The bar, which is located at 821 Divisadero Street, stocks more than 200 varieties of amari, the email shares. Customers can taste flights of specific amaro, the Chronicle further reports, including a flight of various kinds of Fernet. The bar also offers a “bespoke cocktail program,” Dajani shares via email, meaning customers can tell bartenders what style of drink they favor and pick a base spirit and flavor profile; staff will then create a drink according to the patron’s preferences.

San Francisco chef named to Time’s 100

San Francisco’s own Dominique Crenn, the super-star chef behind three-Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn, will be named in Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, a spokesperson shared via email. The print issue drops on Friday, April 19 but the full list is available now on Time’s website. Included under the list’s section of Innovators, Crenn earns the nod, and in a writeup, chef Alice Waters states that Crenn “understands the power that food has to change our lives—and the planet.”
